The region around Grindal Shoals was significant to the movements of both Patriot and British forces.  The shoal made crossing the NW to SE flowing Pacolet River possible for north and south bound traffic.  Consequently much happened here.  Loyalist and Whig neighbors in the region clashed.  General Dan Morgan camped at Grindal Shoal before the battle at Cowpens to forage and gather militia.  British Colonel Banastre Tarleton travelled through here in pursuit of Morgan towards Hannah’s Cowpens.  Tarleton also held and  interrogated captured patriots at Christies Tavern – the ruins of which still stand hidden by bush and trees.
