Fort Gibson was a post in Indian Territory, south of Kansas and East of Arkansas – present day Oklahoma. As a strategic point on the main road between Texas and St. Louis, it was an important spot from which armies could operate. It was occupied by the 2nd Kansas Battery and the rest of the Union Army of the Frontier under General James G. Blunt. For a time it was known by the Union army as Fort Blunt.
The fort had long been an outpost and had been very significant as the terminal of the Trail of Tears as native americans were removed from their ancestral lands and force to Indian Territory – now Oklahoma.
Prior to the war the fort was in disrepair and during the war it changed hands many times.
It was from Fort Gibson (Fort Blunt) that the Union Army of the Frontier launched its attack down the Texas Road on Honey Springs Depot. See the Battle of Honey Springs.
